PhD Track: THE FUTURE OF EU ENLARGEMENT POLICY

Lead Advisor: Prof. Dr. Maria Stoicheva The PhD Track is suitable for PhD students from the areas of European Studies, Political Science, International Relations, History, Economics and other interdisciplinary studies. This PhD track explores the future of EU enlargement policy through a series of online lectures complemented by an interactive group sessions. Participants will examine and debate alternative scenarios for the future of EU enlargement by 2035, assessing their political, institutional, economic, and geopolitical implications, among others. A special emphasis is placed on peer-review and evaluation among the participating PhDs, as well as expert review and evaluation on part of the Lead Advisor and the PhDs' supervisors. To apply, please write to ntsvetkova@phls.uni-sofia.bg and to mstoyanova@phls.uni-sofia.bg by September 25th, 2026. Please send a motivation letter signed by your your supervisor. You will be sent instructions about joining the PhD track by September 30th, 2026. International Summer Music Academy

International Summer Music Academy is an intensive six-day artistic programme designed for advanced and aspiring musicians seeking high-level performance development in an international environment. Organised in collaboration with Singapore Raffles Music College, the Academy centres on individual masterclasses led by internationally recognised performers and professors, offering participants focused artistic guidance, interpretative refinement, and advanced vocal / instrumental / conducting (orchestra/choir) training. The programme includes daily individual sessions, ensemble work, and participant concerts, culminating in a final gala concert where selected participants perform together with a symphony orchestra in a professional concert setting. A distinctive component of the Academy is the thematic laboratory “Stage as Mission”, which explores focus, responsibility, teamwork, and decision-making under performance conditions. In addition to the core musical training, the Academy offers complementary activities such as performance psychology sessions, body awareness and movement practices, creative workshops, reflection laboratories, international career development seminars, and a cultural programme, supporting the participants’ broader artistic and professional growth.Read

Building Engaging Language Learning (BELL)

This summer school explores active and practical approaches to contemporary language teaching and learning, equipping the participants with strategies to create more inclusive, engaging and effective learning environments. The participants will examine how the plurilingual approach and mediation practices can support communication, collaboration and learners’ social-emotional development while valuing their full linguistic repertoires. Through hands-on workshops, the participants will experience and design motivating classroom practices, including escape room challenges, literature and performance-based activities and collaborative learning tasks that promote meaningful language use. The course also focuses on optimising classroom time through flipped learning and developing personalised lesson plans that address diverse learner needs and encourage learner autonomy. In addition, the participants will explore the pedagogical value of translation and cross-linguistic strategies to strengthen language awareness and communicative competence. They will gain practical tools and adaptable lesson ideas to reimagine language classrooms as interactive, learner-centered spaces that foster both linguistic and intercultural development. Read

Molecular Genetics and Genomic Methods in Life Sciences

This two-week intensive course provides a comprehensive introduction to modern molecular genetics and genomic approaches that underpin contemporary life sciences research. The program combines theoretical foundations with practical applications, equipping participants with the knowledge and skills necessary to understand and apply genomic technologies in biological and biomedical contexts. Participants will explore key molecular techniques, such as DNA/RNA extraction, PCR, quantitative PCR, electrophoresis, and sequencing technologies including next-generation sequencing (NGS). In addition to laboratory methodologies, the course introduces essential bioinformatics tools and data analysis strategies used for processing and interpreting genomic data. Participants will gain practical insight into experimental design, quality control, data visualization, and critical evaluation of genomic datasets. Data Analysis with Statistical and Artificial-Intelligence Methods

In this course, we will apply central statistical, AI and XAI models to data analysis (XAI = explainable AI) in a computer environment. We will compare conventional statistical models to the corresponding AI and XAI models by analysing various example data sets. In particular, neural networks, fuzzy systems and evolutionary computing models are studied. The natural language processing with the large language models is also studied briefly.Read

Hacking Creativity: Theatre, AI and Human Imagination camp organizers invite participants to a two-week experiential journey exploring cutting-edge technologies, human creativity, and improvisation skills, while testing techniques that blend technology with creative development. The training explores the relationship between technology and the human element through different communication techniques and digital tools that push the boundaries of creativity and help visualize creative impulses and intentions. It is designed to foster creativity, authenticity, and expressive skills through practical work in improvisation, minimal movement, public speaking, and acting. Participants develop verbal and non-verbal communication, strengthen intuition and empathy, and work through thematic modules including emotional release through movement, body and voice communication, communication with self and others, creative play through improvisation, and creativity through media using movement, performative techniques, and video creation. Human Futures Lab: AI, Learning & Culture

The course is structured around three integrated pillars: (1) AI and global challenges, (2) language and culture, and (3) experiential sociocultural learning in Lithuania. The course explores the main principles of Artificial Intelligence (AI), including algorithms, machine learning, deep learning and Bayesian models of prediction. These technological processes are contrasted with human learning, thinking, creativity and open-ended cultural development. The programme connects technology, philosophy, language and culture, enabling students to critically reflect on contemporary global challenges while gaining practical skills and intercultural competence. Lithuanian Language and Culture Summer and Winter Courses

Each summer (July–August) and winter (January), Vytautas Magnus University offers an intensive one-month Lithuanian Language and Culture Course. This course is open to participants of all ages who wish to learn Lithuanian or enhance their skills in speaking, listening, reading, and writing. The programme provides a well-rounded learning experience that combines language instruction with cultural immersion. Participants benefit from Lithuanian language classes, lectures, workshops, discussions, film evenings, sightseeing tours, and excursions — all designed to deepen their understanding of Lithuanian lifestyle and culture. The course is led by experienced and highly qualified teachers and professors. The Course includes a total of 213 academic hours (equivalent to 8 ECTS credits). The programme consists of classroom instruction, afternoon lectures, conversation practice, independent student work, and a variety of cultural activities, including guided tours and excursions to other Lithuanian cities. Italian Conversation Course – Level B1 (10 hours) December 2025 – January 2026 This 10-hour course is designed for learners who already have a basic knowledge of Italian and wish to improve their ability to communicate in everyday situations. Through practical conversation activities, role-plays, and short authentic listening exercises, students gradually develop greater confidence and spontaneity in speaking. The course aims to strengthen functional communicative skills, enabling participants to handle common interactions with native speakers—such as greeting and introducing themselves, asking for and giving information, ordering at a restaurant or café, shopping, finding their way around the city and using public transportation, and expressing needs, preferences, and simple opinions. The approach focuses on oral communication, with special attention to pronunciation, listening, and spontaneous interaction. The lessons, delivered online, are designed to promote a natural and practical acquisition of Italian, helping students use the language with ease and confidence in real-life contexts. Spanish syntax

This free 10-hour course on Spanish Syntax is designed for learners of all levels who wish to deepen their understanding of sentence structure in Spanish. Open to students of all ages, it is particularly suited for those who are learning Spanish but have still some doubts about the use of verbal moods or who simply want to learn how to use subordinate clauses more effectively. The programme offers a focused and practical learning experience, emphasizing key syntactic structures through clear explanations, examples, and guided practice. Participants will explore topics such as the indicative and subjunctive moods, sequence of tenses, relative and adverbial clauses, and strategies for improving sentence cohesion and complexity. Summer school of Slovene language "Hello, this is the Slovene Mediterranean!"

The Summer Course is intended for all who wish to learn Slovene, from absolute beginners to those who want to improve their language knowledge. It is preferred that the participants are at least 18 years of age. Nine-days language course is held on different levels: elementary, intermediate and advanced. The course comprises 40 periods. The duration of each period is 45 minutes, and there are 5 periods a day (from 9 a.m. to 13.30 p.m.). Upon completion students will be awarded 3 ECTS. All participants of the summer school must pay a fee of €60, which is not covered by the scholarship. The deadline for paying the registration fee is 15th of June 2025.
